Signing Your Child Up For Gymnastics? 3 Tips You Should Know About The Leotard

If your child is about to begin gymnastics lessons, it's time to start worrying about the leotard. Proper wearing and care of the leotard is crucial, especially if you want them to continually look their best. If you've never had a child in gymnastics before, you may not know the details involved in leotard wearing and care. To help you get started, here are some easy-to-follow tips.

It Will Need to be Secured in Place

When it comes to your child's leotard, the most important thing you'll need to know is how to keep it in place. The last thing you want is to have it right up on the bottom. Once the leotard begins to ride up on the bottom, natural instinct kicks in, and your child may try to reach behind and adjust it. Unfortunately, that's the worst thing your child can do, especially during competition. In fact, if your child adjusts their leotard during competition, they could face a reduction in their score. To prevent the leotard from riding up, you can use one of two methods. First, apply a thin layer of skin adhesive to your child's bottom and then have them pull their leotard up. The adhesive will keep the leotard in place. The second method is to use double-sided skin tape. Both methods are highly effective.

It Should be Taken Off Soon After Practice

Once your child has finished with their lessons, or competition, it's important that they remove their leotard as soon as possible. Removing the leotard, and placing it in a breathable garment bag, will ensure that the moisture doesn't get locked into the fabric. It's also important that your child fold it neatly before placing it in the garment bag. Otherwise, the fabric can be ruined.

It Will Need to be Washed Carefully

As soon as you get home from the gymnastics studio, you should wash your child's leotard. Waiting to wash the garment could cause odors to get locked in, and could wear out the fabric much quicker than it should. To wash a leotard, you should turn it inside out and place it in a sink filled with cool water. Try to avoid using detergent. However, if your child's leotard starts smelling musty, or they've gotten something on the fabric, you can add a few drops of mild laundry detergent. Once you've washed the leotard, wring it out gently and hang it up to air dry. Do not place your child's leotard in the dryer.
